1. It was very noisy next door. Our neighbours were having a party.
   — Past Continuous: действие было «в процессе» в тот момент (шум сейчас, вечеринка идёт).

2. We were good friends. We had known each other for years.
   — Past Perfect: «к тому моменту в прошлом» уже существовал длительный результат (знание — стативный глагол, обычно не в Continuous).

3. John and I went for a walk. I had difficulty keeping up with him because he was walking so fast.
   — Past Continuous: описывает параллельное фоновое действие в тот момент («он шёл быстро»).

4. Sue was sitting on the ground. She was out of breath. She had been running.
   — Past Perfect Continuous: длительное действие только что завершилось и объясняет результат (тяжёлое дыхание).

5. When we arrived, everybody was sitting round the table and talking. Their mouths were empty, but their stomachs were full. They had been eating.
   — Past Perfect Continuous: процесс закончился к нашему приезду, а признаки результата налицо (сытые животы).
