What sports are most popular with teenagers in your country? Why do teenagers often do extreme sports? What kind of sport is your favourite?

I’m from Bulgaria, so I’ll answer for here.

Most popular sports with teenagers:
In schools and local clubs the big three are football (soccer), volleyball, and basketball. Football wins by a mile—every yard or schoolyard turns into a pitch after classes. Volleyball is huge because most schools have proper indoor gyms and it’s easy to form mixed teams. Basketball has a strong street culture; a lot of kids play pickup games in the evenings. After those, you see a lot of athletics (track), martial arts (judo, karate, taekwondo), and lately fitness/gym sessions because teens want something flexible that fits around studying. In winter, skiing and snowboarding are popular for those who can get to the mountains (Vitosha, Bansko, Borovets), and along the coast, swimming and beach volleyball pick up in summer.

Why teens often do extreme sports:

• Adrenaline + identity. It’s a rush and a way to stand out—posting a new trick on socials is instant feedback.

• Access got easier. Rental gear and beginner lessons for things like snowboarding, climbing gyms, and wake parks make the first step less scary and less expensive.

• Community. Skateparks and climbing gyms create tight-knit groups where older kids mentor younger ones.

• Progress feels visible. You can measure a new skill (higher wall, cleaner landing), which is addictive in a good way.

• Escape from screens. Oddly, the more time they spend online, the more they crave something real and a bit risky outdoors.

My favourite sport:
Basketball. I love the mix of strategy and flow—you can change a game with good defense and smart passing, not just height or speed. It’s easy to organize (ball + hoop), great for fitness without feeling like “exercise,” and the social part—3×3 on a local court after classes—makes it the one I keep coming back to.
