The first colonists started the tradition of Thanksgiving Day.

The origins of Thanksgiving in the United States can be traced back to the early 17th century when English Pilgrims settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The most famous early Thanksgiving celebration occurred in 1621, when the Pilgrims and Native Americans, specifically the Wampanoag people, shared a feast to give thanks for a successful harvest. While it wasn't immediately established as an annual national holiday, the tradition of giving thanks for a good harvest continued and gradually became a more formalized holiday, eventually being declared a national day of Thanksgiving by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863.
