  1. The United Kingdom consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (the last one occupies the north-east of the island of Ireland).

  2. The British Parliament consists of the Monarch and two chambers: the House of Commons (elected) and the House of Lords (appointed/Hereditary and life peers, bishops, etc.).

  3. There are the following political parties in Great Britain: the Conservative Party, the Labour Party, and the Liberal Democrats; also significant are the Scottish National Party (SNP), Plaid Cymru (Party of Wales), the Green Party of England and Wales, as well as Northern Ireland parties such as the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and Sinn Féin.

  4. There are some famous educational establishments such as the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge (Oxbridge), Imperial College London, University College London (UCL), the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), King’s College London, the University of Edinburgh, and the University of Manchester.

  5. The United Kingdom is situated on the British Isles, off the north-western coast of continental Europe.

  6. The British Isles are washed by the Atlantic Ocean and its seas: the North Sea to the east, the English Channel to the south, the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland, and the Celtic Sea to the southwest.

  7. The Queen’s (Monarch’s) rights are limited by the constitution in the form of statute law, common law and constitutional conventions; in practice, by Parliament, the Cabinet, and the courts within a constitutional monarchy.

  8. The territory of Great Britain is the largest island of the British Isles, comprising England, Scotland and Wales; landscape is mostly lowlands and rolling hills with higher relief in the north and west (Scottish Highlands, the Pennines, the Cambrian Mountains). Climate is temperate maritime.

  9. The population is about 67 million people, with the majority living in England—especially in the south-east and large urban areas like London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, and Liverpool.
