A giraffe is a large, tall mammal native to Africa, known for its long neck and legs. Its body is covered with a patchy coat of yellow and brown spots, which helps it blend in with its natural environment. Giraffes are herbivores and primarily eat leaves, fruits, and flowers from trees, especially acacia trees. They have a unique feeding style, using their long necks to reach high branches that most other animals cannot access.

Giraffes are the tallest land animals, with adult males growing up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) tall, while females are typically shorter. Their necks alone can be over 6 feet (1.8 meters) long. Despite their impressive height, giraffes have a relatively short neck compared to their body size, as they have only seven neck vertebrae, the same number as humans, but much longer in proportion.

In terms of behavior, giraffes are social animals, often found in groups called herds. These herds can be loose, with individuals coming and going, and they are usually made up of females and their young, while males may be more solitary. Giraffes are peaceful animals and communicate with each other using various sounds, such as grunts, snorts, and even low-frequency hums that are too deep for humans to hear.

Despite their size, giraffes are excellent runners and can reach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour (56 km/h) over short distances. Their main predators are lions and crocodiles, though their height and ability to kick make them difficult to catch. The giraffe's long legs and neck give it an exceptional view of its surroundings, helping it detect predators from a distance.
