The United Kingdom is a country in north-western Europe. It is situated on the British Isles and consists of four parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is washed by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the Irish Sea and the English Channel. Great Britain is separated from the continent by the English Channel.

There are many rivers in the United Kingdom, but most of them are not very long. The most famous river is the Thames, which flows through London. Other important rivers are the Severn, the Trent and the Clyde. Rivers play an important role in the life of the country.

The mountains in the UK are not very high. The highest mountains are in Scotland. The highest peak is Ben Nevis. There are also mountains in Wales, for example Snowdon, and hills in the north of England.

The climate of Great Britain is mild and wet. It is not very cold in winter and not very hot in summer. The weather often changes, and it often rains. Fog and cloudy days are common too.

The country has many animals and plants. There are foxes, rabbits, deer, squirrels and many kinds of birds. In the forests and fields, people can see oak, beech and pine trees, as well as grass, flowers and bushes. Nature in the UK is green because of the wet climate.

There are many big cities and small towns in the United Kingdom. London is the capital and the largest city. It is a political, cultural and economic centre. Other important cities are Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and Glasgow. The UK is a beautiful country with old traditions, interesting nature and famous cities.
