Negative and interrogative forms are made with did because here had means “имел, был у кого-то” and is used like the main verb have in the Past Simple.

AffirmativeI had a book.
NegativeI didn’t have a book.
InterrogativeDid I have a book?

Short answers: Yes, I did. / No, I didn’t.
