   Здесь действие происходит сейчас: is painting.
   Вопрос о длительности действия: has he been doing.
   С since lunch нужен Present Perfect Continuous: has been painting.

2. His job is very interesting. He illustrates books.

   Present Simple, потому что речь идёт о постоянной работе, профессии.

3. The book is beautifully illustrated. I am sure she will like it.

   Книга оформлена кем-то → страдательный залог: is illustrated.
   Предположение о будущем: will like.

4. She said he would paint the gate the following Saturday.

   После глагола said будущее в прошлом передаётся формой would + infinitive.
   Также вместо the next Saturday естественнее сказать the following Saturday.

5. I want them to publish this book.

   После want + someone употребляется инфинитив с to: want them to publish.

6. The book can be published next year.

   После модального глагола can в пассивном залоге используется форма:
   can + be + V3 → can be published.

7. She burnt a hole in the shirt while she was ironing it.

   Одно короткое завершённое действие — Past Simple: burnt.
   Длительное действие, во время которого это произошло — Past Continuous: was ironing.
   В американском варианте также возможно burned.

8. If she irons the shirt, he will put it on.

   Первый тип условных предложений:
   If + Present Simple, затем will + infinitive.

9. Yesterday he was told by the teacher that the essays had already been checked.

   He was told — Past Simple Passive.
   Проверка работ произошла раньше, чем учитель сообщил об этом, поэтому нужен Past Perfect Passive: had been checked.

10. The essays have not been checked yet. We’ll have to wait.

Yet обычно употребляется с Present Perfect.
Пассивная форма: have not been checked.
