Почему именно так: Lyme Hall, the lawn, it, litter, lunch — единственное число, поэтому ставим is. The gardens, some of the flowers, special events — множественное число, поэтому ставим are. После is/are используется третья форма глагола: visited, looked after, cut, watered, picked, collected, held, served.
