Explanation of the rules

When we change commands and requests from direct speech into reported speech, we usually use the verb tell (told) followed by an object and an infinitive.

1. Positive commands (утвердительные повелительные предложения):

Structure: told + object + to + verb

Example:

• Direct speech: "Open the door!" she said to me.

• Reported speech: She told me to open the door.

2. Negative commands (отрицательные повелительные предложения):

Structure: told + object + not to + verb

Example:

• Direct speech: "Don't touch that!" he said to me.

• Reported speech: He told me not to touch that.

3. Changes in pronouns (изменение местоимений):

When converting direct speech into reported speech, we sometimes need to change pronouns according to the context.

For example:

• "Don't go into my room!" John said to Mary.

• John told Mary not to go into his room.

Here, my changes to his because the room belongs to John.

Important: In reported commands, we do not use quotation marks, and the imperative verb changes to the infinitive with to or not to.
