A hare is a medium-sized wild mammal in the genus Lepus, known for its long ears, powerful hind legs, and exceptional speed. Unlike rabbits, hares are generally larger, have black-tipped ears, and longer limbs adapted for running rather than digging. They live above ground in shallow depressions called forms instead of burrows.

Hares are built like sprinters: their hind legs can propel them to speeds around 60–70 km/h, and they escape predators with sharp zigzag turns. Their eyes are set high and wide on the head, giving a broad field of vision. In colder climates, species like the Arctic hare and mountain hare change coat color—brown or gray in summer, white in winter—for camouflage. Others keep a mottled brown coat that blends with open fields and scrub.

They are primarily herbivores, feeding on grasses, herbs, buds, bark, and agricultural crops. Hares practice coprophagy (re-ingesting soft fecal pellets) to extract maximum nutrients from fibrous plants. Most activity occurs at dawn and dusk, though they can be active at night. They are typically solitary outside the breeding season.

Breeding is energetic and visible: “boxing” is a common courtship behavior where a female repels an overly eager male. Females (does) give birth to leverets—fully furred, open-eyed young—on the surface. Because leverets are relatively mature at birth, they can move shortly after being born. Several litters may be produced during a season.

Hares inhabit open landscapes—meadows, farmlands, steppe, heath, and tundra—across much of the Northern Hemisphere. As prey for foxes, lynx, birds of prey, and other predators, they are an important part of many ecosystems. They also hold a notable place in folklore and art, often symbolizing speed, alertness, and the rhythms of the seasons.
