Both each other and one another can be used in these sentences. In modern English, they usually mean the same thing.

  • a) They listened to each other. / They listened to one another.
  • b) They sent each other text messages. / They sent one another text messages.
  • c) We gave each other presents. / We gave one another presents.
  • d) We didn’t speak to each other. / We didn’t speak to one another.
  • e) We helped each other. / We helped one another.

For two people, each other is more common, but one another is also acceptable.
