2. Vocabulary. Read the text and guess the meaning of the phrases in bold. Carl arrived at the airport at ten o'clock in the morning. He was off to Miami for the weekend, so he only carried one piece of hand luggage with him. Carl's friend Stephen flew in from New York at 10.15, so Carl waited for him at arrivals. When Stephen's plane landed, they went to the airport café and had a cup of coffee. Then it was time for Carl to leave. Unfortunately, there was a three-hour delay, and his flight left at 2.30. He went to several departure lounges to kill time before he got to his gate.

  • Flew in from New York — arrived by plane from New York.
  • Arrivals — the part of the airport where passengers come out after landing.
  • The plane landed — the plane came down to the ground.
  • A delay — the flight was later than planned.
  • Departure lounges — waiting areas for passengers before their flights leave.
  • To kill time — to do something while waiting.
  • Gate — the place where passengers board the plane.
