Poseidon was the god of the sea, earthquakes, and horses in ancient Greek mythology. He was one of the twelve Olympian gods and brother to Zeus and Hades. In the stories about Atlantis, Poseidon is said to have fallen in love with a mortal woman named Cleito and created a magnificent island kingdom for her and their descendants, dividing it among his ten sons. This myth portrays him as a powerful but sometimes vengeful figure, capable of controlling the oceans and the fate of civilizations.

The capital city of Atlantis, according to Plato’s dialogues, was incredibly grand and well-planned. It was described as having concentric rings of land and water, like a series of circular canals surrounding a central hill. Bridges and tunnels connected these rings, and the city had impressive harbors to accommodate fleets of ships. Buildings were made of metals like orichalcum, gold, silver, and bronze, shining with splendor. The city also had a large central palace and a network of streets and temples radiating outwards, reflecting advanced engineering and urban planning for that era.

Inside the temple dedicated to Poseidon, there was a massive gold statue of the god driving a chariot pulled by horses, possibly sea-horses, symbolizing his dominion over the ocean. The temple itself was richly decorated with precious metals and ornaments, signifying the wealth and devotion of the Atlanteans. The altar and sacred areas would have been used for rituals, sacrifices, and offerings to honor Poseidon and secure his favor for the island.

The Atlanteans were described as an advanced civilization with incredible engineering skills. They built large ships, harbors, and irrigation systems, mined and worked with rare metals, and constructed temples and palaces that showcased both artistry and technology. They were also said to be powerful militarily, controlling neighboring islands and regions, and practicing a form of government that combined monarchy with a council of rulers descended from Poseidon. Over time, according to Plato, they became morally corrupt, greedy, and tyrannical, which led to their downfall.

Atlantis disappeared in a single day and night of catastrophic events, according to the legend. Earthquakes and floods supposedly destroyed the island, causing it to sink beneath the sea. Plato’s account suggests a combination of natural disasters, like tectonic shifts and massive waves, which overwhelmed the city and buried it underwater, erasing all traces of its grandeur.

The exact location of Atlantis is unknown, and scholars have proposed multiple theories. Some suggest it could have been in the Atlantic Ocean beyond the Pillars of Hercules (the modern Strait of Gibraltar), while others point to the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, or even Antarctica. The lack of archaeological evidence makes it difficult to pinpoint a definitive site, so most accounts remain speculative.

Santorini (ancient Thera) is often considered the most probable location of Atlantis because of its dramatic volcanic history. Around 1600 BCE, the Minoan civilization on nearby Crete experienced a massive volcanic eruption on Santorini, which destroyed much of the island and generated tsunamis that affected the region. The geography of Santorini with its caldera and circular shape roughly resembles Plato’s description of concentric rings of land and water. Moreover, the eruption would have seemed catastrophic and sudden to contemporary observers, matching the account of Atlantis sinking overnight. The combination of geological evidence, archaeological remains of an advanced society, and the island’s striking resemblance to Plato’s account makes Santorini a compelling candidate for the legendary Atlantis.
