Почему так:

• Past Simple используется для завершённых действий в прошлом: burned, chose, heard. Слова yesterday, last year, on Sunday указывают на конкретное законченное время.

• Past Progressive описывает действие, которое происходило в определённый момент: was blowing at 5 o’clock, were not playing at four o’clock.

• В предложении 4 два действия шли одновременно, поэтому используются две формы Past Progressive: was feeding и was reading.
