Explanation of the tenses

Past Simple is used for completed actions or events in the past.

Examples:

  • had — We had a great time. (Мы отлично провели время.)

  • started — It started to rain. (Начался дождь.)

  • found — I found them. (Я нашёл их.)

  • lost — You lost it. (Ты потерял его.)

  • fell — I fell. (Я упал.)

Past Continuous is used for actions that were in progress at a particular moment in the past. It often describes a longer action interrupted by a shorter action in Past Simple.

Examples:

  • was shining — The sun was shining. (Солнце светило.)

  • were eating — We were eating our lunch. (Мы обедали.)

  • were looking for — We were looking for plants. (Мы искали растения.)

  • was climbing — I was climbing over some rocks. (Я перелезал через камни.)

Important rules:

  • Past Simple: Subject + verb in the second form (V2).

  • Past Continuous: Subject + was/were + verb-ing.

  • In Past Simple questions, use did + subject + base verb: Where did you find...?

  • After didn't, use the base form: It didn't stop.

Remember: Past Continuous describes an action in progress, while Past Simple often describes an event that happened during or interrupted that action.

For example: I was climbing over some rocks when I fell. — Я перелезал через камни, когда упал.
