You can imagine a giant bottle of milk standing at your front door. In the hallway, there is a huge loaf of bread. In the kitchen, apples are falling from the ceiling. On the sofa, there is a giant piece of cheese, and in your bedroom, eggs are rolling across the floor.

These unusual pictures make the information easier to remember!

4. Why is this technique effective?

The technique works because our brains are good at remembering places, pictures and unusual experiences. Instead of trying to remember separate words, we connect them with familiar locations and visual images.

Scientific research supports its effectiveness. A 2021 meta-analysis of 13 randomised controlled studies found that the Method of Loci can significantly improve memory performance. A more recent systematic review, published in 2025, also examined its effectiveness and the psychological processes behind it.

5. Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages:

For example, when learning ten new English words, we can imagine placing each word in a different room of our house. Then we can mentally walk through the rooms to remember all ten words.
