1. You’ve received a letter from your friend. He/she complains of loneliness and spends a lot of time in front of the computer and TV. Write an informal letter to him/her. Give him/her some recommendations (to watch TV less; to try to make friends via social nets; to join any youth club (sports, computer etc) he/she is interested in). Tell about your own group (when and where you meet; what you usually do; where you go together).
2. Write a brief essay about your (imaginary) summer/part-time job. Mention:
- kinds of part-time/summer job you can get
- the qualities you need to get the job
- special skills you have
- express your opinion about summer jobs’ kinds, salary and teens’ attitude to them

1. An informal letter
Dear Alex,
I was sorry to hear that you feel lonely and spend so much time in front of the computer and TV. Watching films and playing games can be fun, but too much screen time can make you feel even more isolated.
Try to watch TV less and go outside more often. You could also make friends through social networks, but remember to be careful and do not share personal information with strangers. Another good idea is to join a youth club that interests you, for example a sports, computer or music club. There you can meet people who enjoy the same things as you do.
I go to a photography club. We meet every Wednesday at 5 p.m. in our school library. We learn how to take photos, discuss pictures and sometimes organise small exhibitions. At weekends we often go to parks, museums or interesting places in the city together.
I hope you will find an activity you really like soon.
Best wishes,
Sam
2. A summer job
Last summer I had a part-time job at a small bookshop near my home. Teenagers can work as assistants in cafés, shops, camps, pet centres, libraries or as tutors for younger children. Some people also deliver newspapers or help at events.
For my job I needed to be polite, responsible and attentive. I had to put books on shelves, help customers and keep the shop tidy. I also used my computer skills to check whether a book was available and make simple lists of orders.
I think summer jobs are useful because teenagers learn to manage time, communicate with adults and understand the value of money. The salary is usually not very high, but experience and new skills can be just as valuable. Teenagers should choose safe work that does not prevent them from resting during the holidays.
