  • The Giant’s Causeway is a natural area on the coast of Northern Ireland. It consists of thousands of tall basalt columns, many of them with six sides.

  • People cannot walk to Scotland because the causeway does not form a complete dry bridge: most of it is under the sea.

  • According to an Irish legend, the giant Finn McCool built it to cross the sea and fight the Scottish giant Benandonner.

  • Finn’s wife, Oonagh, saved him. She dressed Finn as a huge baby. Benandonner saw the “baby”, imagined how enormous Finn’s father must be, became frightened and ran back to Scotland.

  • Scientists explain that the Giant’s Causeway formed when molten rock cooled after volcanic activity. As the basalt cooled and shrank, it cracked into columns.
