Gretna Green is associated with St Valentine’s Day, the day of love on 14 February. It is a small village in Scotland, close to the border with England.

In 1754, the English Marriage Act required people under 21 to get their parents’ permission to marry. This law did not apply in Scotland. Scottish law allowed a couple to marry by declaring their wish to marry in front of witnesses.

That is why many young English couples ran away to Gretna Green: it was the first Scottish village after the border. They often asked the local blacksmith to witness their marriage. Today young people go there because it is a romantic place with a famous wedding tradition.
