The tense changes in reported questions: Where is the church? becomes She asked where the church was.

In indirect questions, the tense usually does not change: I’d like to know where the church is.

Indirect questions are more polite than direct questions. Notice that indirect questions have normal word order: where the church is, not where is the church.
