What is a film without popcorn?
Popcorn became a popular snack food in North America in the 19th century and was sold at entertainment places like circuses and fairs. The steam-powered popcorn maker was invented, and it became possible to produce a lot of this snack. Popcorn had a nice smell and it made many people buy it. In the 1930s cinema owners didn't sell popcorn inside the cinemas. They wanted to protect the carpets. They also said that the people eating popcorn made a loud sound. But more and more people began buying popcorn on their way into the cinema, so cinema owners understood that they could make money from the popular snack. As a result, they decided to sell it inside the cinema.
Today popcorn is still economically important to cinemas. It is cheap to make, and there are people who also buy popcorn when they go out of the cinema.
For many of us eating popcorn is an important part of watching a film. Even when we watch TV at home, we often make ourselves some microwave popcorn. Old habits, it seems, are hard to break!
