Table Manners and Rules of Behavior at the Table

Good table manners are important in any culture because they show respect for other people and make the meal pleasant for everyone. Here are some basic rules of behavior at the table.

1. Before you start eating

  • Always wash your hands before you come to the table.

  • Wait for everyone to sit down before you take your seat.

  • Sit up straight and do not put your elbows on the table.

  • Place your napkin on your lap as soon as you sit down.

  • Do not start eating until everyone is served and the host says that you can start.

2. How to use cutlery and dishes

  • Use the knife in your right hand and the fork in your left hand (in European style), unless it is different in your country.

  • Do not play with your knife, fork, spoon, glasses or plates.

  • Use each piece of cutlery for its purpose. For example, use a soup spoon for soup and a dessert spoon for dessert.

  • Do not reach across the table. If you need something, politely say: “Could you pass me the salt, please?”

3. Eating politely

  • Take small bites and chew with your mouth closed.

  • Do not speak with your mouth full. If you want to say something, swallow first, then talk.

  • Eat slowly and do not make loud noises while chewing or drinking.

  • Keep your phone away and do not text or scroll during the meal.

  • Do not blow on hot food loudly; wait a little until it cools down.

  • If you accidentally drop something or make a small mess, say “Sorry” and clean it carefully if you can.

4. Talking at the table

  • Take part in the conversation, but do not interrupt other people.

  • Listen when someone else is speaking and look at them to show you are interested.

  • Avoid arguing or talking about very unpleasant topics while eating (for example, illnesses or problems with other people).

  • Be polite and use phrases like “please”, “thank you”, “you’re welcome”.

5. What you should not do

  • Do not put too much food in your mouth at once.

  • Do not lick your knife, your plate or your fingers. Use your napkin instead.

  • Do not lean over the table to take food. Ask for it to be passed.

  • Do not push your plate away or play with food if you don’t like it. Simply leave what you cannot finish.

  • Do not burp or make other rude noises. If it happens by accident, quietly say “Excuse me”.

6. When you finish eating

  • When you have finished eating, place your knife and fork together on your plate. This shows that you are done.

  • Do not leave the table without saying something like “Excuse me, may I leave the table?”

  • Thank the host or the person who prepared the food. You can say, “Thank you for the meal. It was delicious.”

7. General rules

  • Be considerate of other people at the table. Do not take the last piece of food without asking if anyone else wants it.

  • Respect cultural differences. Table manners may be slightly different in other countries, so it is polite to observe what others do.

  • Remember that good table manners are not only about rules, but about making everyone feel comfortable.

These simple rules of behavior at the table help create a friendly and respectful atmosphere and show that you are a polite and well-mannered person.
