Work in Paris. Ask and answer the questions. 1) Are supermarkets usually small or big? Is there a supermarket in the place where you live? What do you buy there? How often do you go there? 2) Where do people often buy vegetables and fruit? Is there a market in the place where you live? 3) What is there in the centre of your city or town? 4) Where do people usually go if they want to see paintings? Are there any picture galleries in your city or town? Are there any museums? 5) What question do people usually ask when they want to get to some place but don't know how? How do you usually get to school, the nearest cinema, the railway station, or the airport?

In Paris, supermarkets are usually medium-sized rather than huge. There are big hypermarkets on the outskirts, but in the city you mostly see Franprix, Monoprix, Carrefour City—compact and close to home. There’s one on my street. I buy basics there: milk, yogurt, bread, pasta, canned tomatoes, cheese, eggs, coffee, toiletries, and sometimes ready meals. I pop in two or three times a week because apartments are small and I don’t stockpile much.

People often buy vegetables and fruit at neighborhood open-air markets (marchés) or at greengrocers (primeurs). Yes, there’s a market near me that sets up twice a week in the morning; I also have a primeur on the corner for quick stops. Markets are great for seasonal produce and chatting with the vendors.

In the center of the city you’ll find the historic core around Île de la Cité and the Hôtel de Ville, with the Seine, the cathedral area, and lots of pedestrian streets. There are major sights, government buildings, shops, cafés, and big squares; it’s busy but very walkable.

People usually go to museums or galleries to see paintings. Yes, there are picture galleries in Paris—from small contemporary spaces to big names—and there are many museums. The most famous are the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay, but there are also places like the Centre Pompidou and numerous smaller museums scattered around the arrondissements.

People usually ask, “Excuse me, how do I get to…?” or “Which way is it to…?” If I’m going to school or across town, I usually take the métro; it’s the fastest. For the nearest cinema, I walk or use a short métro ride. For the railway stations, I take the métro or RER depending on the line. For the airports: RER B to Charles-de-Gaulle, and either Orlybus/Orlyval or tram plus métro for Orly. If it’s close and the weather’s good, I also use a Vélib’ bike.
