The History of London Transport

London has a long and interesting transport history. In the past, people moved around the city mostly on foot, by horse, or by boat on the River Thames. The river was very important because London was a busy trading city.

In the 19th century London grew very quickly, and streets became crowded. Horse buses and horse trams appeared, but they were not enough for such a large city. In 1863 the first underground railway in the world opened in London. Today it is known as the London Underground, or simply the Tube.

In the 20th century buses became very popular. The red double-decker bus became one of the symbols of London. Taxis also became an important part of city life. Later, electric trains, modern buses, and improved Underground lines helped people travel faster and more comfortably.

Today London has many kinds of transport: the Underground, buses, trains, taxis, bicycles, river boats, and trams. The city also tries to make transport cleaner and safer. The history of London transport shows how the city changed and how people found new ways to move around it.
